July 9, 2021
It's July 9, 2021. It's Friday! We know you missed receiving playlists from us to ease into the weekend, so here's a brand new one. Enjoy. Apple Music | Spotify ⏰ Today's Big Stories... in 30 Seconds Today We Watched, Read, and Listened to (so you don't have to): 407 articles, 13 podcasts, 12 press releases, 379 tweets, and 16 YouTube videos 1. OnePlus Says It Slows Down Popular Apps to Save Battery Life Following the discovery that the OnePlus 9 slows down apps like Instagram, YouTube, and Twitter, OnePlus confirmed this was intentionally done to save battery life. Some may not like the implementation, though, preferring a heads up first or ways to manage their own apps. Too much to ask, OnePlus? 2. Google Halts Chromebook Update, Causing More Problems Google has halted an update for Chromebooks as it was causing Chrome OS to slow down, but Linux installs didn't get the memo. Apparently, those trying to install Linux while running the prior Chrome OS version will be told to update, only they can't, because it's gone. Oh, computers, how we love you. 3. Qualcomm Reveals First Flagship Smartphone Qualcomm has announced its first smartphone. Designed by Asus and dubbed the "Smartphone for Snapdragon Insiders," it has the Snapdragon 888 5G mobile platform, three rear cameras for 8K shooting, a $1,500 price tag, and more. No release date yet, but Qualcomm says it's coming "soon." 🦑 Go Deeper Nintendo has a new OLED Switch model coming out, but do you really need to rush out a get it? Charlie Sorrel doesn't think so, especially if you'll only play it while docked to a TV. 🎱 By the Numbers Growing, but still a small percentage Data: Statcounter Chrome OS has seen some growth over the last year, rising to claim over 2% of the desktop OS market share from March to May 2021. In a vacuum, you wonder what's going on, but when you remember it's competing with Windows and macOS, it's just nice to have a portion at all. 🔥 Today's Hot Deal
This WAVLINK USB-C Universal Docking Station is $100 on Newegg right now, down from it's usual $156. 4K laptop docking, and multiple USB and ethernet ports? Pick this one up now. 🤓 Nerd Out "See? Anything can live in Alaska." —Rob LeFebvre, Senior News Editor Turns out, we don't know everything about dinosaurs and how they lived. Thanks to newly discovered dinosaur bones in Alaska, we now know they were also capable of adapting to arctic climates. Who knew!? (Share on Twitter) 💎 You Know You Want It Can a typewriter be this cute? Image: LEGO We hope LEGO never runs out of ideas, because this LEGO Typewriter is too good to pass up. Authentic feeling keys, a 1950s-style, and no ink or paper so you don't have to worry about typos? Yes! The only downside is it's out of stock, but that just gives you move time to find a spot for it at home. 🎥 Behind the Scenes "Computer, will people watch this?" Did you know Netflix uses machine learning to pitch shows to people? It's true, and it has a nice, lengthy breakdown of how it all works. We won't pretend to understand all of it, but we bet one of you does. Give it a read. 🗞 Extra! Extra! We've got you covered with the best in daily tech news!
