July 29, 2021
It's July 29, 2021. Today is National Lasagna Day, National Chicken Wing Day, and National Chili Dog Day, which would make for a very odd, yet very awesome, meal. Bon appétit! ⏰ Today's Big Stories... in 30 Seconds Today We Watched, Read, and Listened to (so you don't have to): 324 articles, 5 podcasts, 12 press releases, 426 tweets, and 11 YouTube videos 1. Oculus Recalls Quest 2 Foam Inserts Due to 'Skin Irritation' Facebook-owned Oculus sent out emails to Quest 2 VR users detailing a recall for the headset's facial foam insert, saying that there have been reports of skin irritation. The company is pausing sales until they can replace it, and offering silicone inserts to current users. In your face, Oculus! 2. OnePlus 7 and 7 Pro Get Fix for HD Video Bug OnePlus has resolved an issue with the digital rights management (DRM) system that affected many OnePlus 7 and 7 Pro devices (mostly a bug that affected HD video authorizations) after installing the May security update. The fix is currently available for North American users, with other regions to follow "soon." Fixing things is good, for sure. 3. Apple to Host a Pet Photography Virtual Session Looking to get some sweet pet portraits with your phone? Well, Apple's got an online course to help you do just that. Professional photographer Jason Nocito is hosting a live virtual session today from noon to 1 pm ET where he'll show you how to use your iPhone to take portrait photos of your fur family. 🦑 Go Deeper Sure, we've all got access to millions of songs on our phones these days, but it can all feel a little overwhelming. Retro-gear fanatic Charlie Sorrel has a deeper look at how an old iPod Classic could help us all feel less overloaded. 🎱 By the Numbers Still on the upward trend Data: Android Central While Facebook doesn't report on specific sales numbers of its Oculus Quest 2 headset, the developer of popular VR app Rec Room estimates that as of April 2021, the headset has likely sold around 5 million units, making it a super fast seller. The quick response to irritated skin will likely keep sales increasing. 🔥 Today's Hot Deal
This Eufy home security setup is a massive 30% off over at Amazon right now, netting you a 4-cam system with HomeKit compatibility, 2K resolution, and a 1-year battery life for $405.99. That's good stuff! 🤓 Nerd Out "Yeah, but when will we see the nanobots?" —Rob LeFebvre, Senior News Editor Apparently, scientists have found that embryonic cells can self-organize. The resulting collections are called xenobots, and the research is challenging the way we look at life itself. Wow. (Share on Twitter) 💎 You Know You Want It "The only Simpsons game I can think of is the one where we pretend dad isn't an alcoholic." -Bart Simpson Image: Konami Let's be clear, you know you want this mini arcade cabinet version of The Simpsons video game (which is now nearing its 30th anniversary). Heck, it even comes with its own custom bar stool. Go ahead, pre-order what's likely to be a hot seller this August 16th, then bask in the jealousy of all your friends as you say, "Ha-hah!" like Nelson does. 🎮 Up-Down-A-B-Start Going back to the basement If you spent any part of your childhood (or later, we see you) playing tabletop role-playing games, Demeo is the VR game you want to check out. Take a quick read of this fair and balanced review of the title and decide whether you want to hang out in a VR basement playing with miniatures with a few of your buddies (spoiler, you do). 🗞 Extra!
