July 26, 2021
It's July 26, 2021. On this day in 1996, AT&T and Microsoft teamed up to promote Internet Explorer, in an attempt for both companies to easily enter the internet business. We think it worked out well for them. ⏰ Today's Big Stories... in 30 Seconds Today We Watched, Read, and Listened to (so you don't have to): 157 articles, 4 podcasts, 8 press releases, 229 tweets, and 8 YouTube videos 1. Apple Music's Lossless Audio Streaming Now on Android An Apple Music app update quietly added support for lossless and spatial audio to Android. There are two caveats, though. The first is you'll need good wired headphones to really hear the difference. The second is that lossless audio requires more data to stream. The Monkey's Paw curls once again. 2. The Latest Google Doodle Celebrates the Olympics Google's search engine was updated on Friday to include an adorable browser game celebrating the Olympics. In what Google called the largest interactive doodle it's ever made, you played as Lucky the Ninja Cat in a series of games inspired by the event. Sound like a good time? Go check it out if you can. 3. Instagram Testing Feature That Locks Your Account From Harassment Instagram wants to curb bullying and harassment on its platform by testing a new feature called "Limits." When active, it will temporarily suspend your account when in a moment of risk, so you can avoid interactions with users, such as unwanted comments or DMs. We like this idea, Instagram. Keep at it. 🦑 Go Deeper The Nintendo Switch OLED may not be what people wanted, but it's what Nintendo's doing. Joshua Hawkins thinks that's okay, because we probably didn't need a "Switch Pro" anyway. 🎱 By the Numbers Instagram's just barely in 4th place Data: We Are Social, Hootsuite Facebook is still the biggest social media platform in the world, currently holding the attention of nearly 3 billion people in July 2021. By comparison, the competition is fighting for 2nd, 3rd, and 4th place, with Instagram (1.38bn) only slightly out of reach of FB Messenger (1.30bn) and WeChat (1.24 bn). 🔥 Today's Hot Deal
Sony's WH-1000XM3 wireless, noise-cancelling headphones are $180 off on Best Buy right now, making them a relative bargain at $170. Need a new set of cans with Google Assistant support? These are the ones to get. 🤓 Nerd Out "Is it better or worse than Earth?" —Rob LeFebvre, Senior News Editor Before we colonize Mars, we should probably understand its internal structure first. Fortunately, scientists have recently done just that, and published a trio of new studies to prove it.
