AUGUST 6, 2020
Everything worth knowing in tech today, August 6, 2020. Don't forget, as Mulan once said, "Get off the roof, get off the roof, get off the roof!" ⏰ Today's Big Stories... in 30 Seconds Today We Watched, Read, and Listened to (so you don't have to): 343 Articles, 7 Podcasts, 18 Press Releases, 208 Tweets, & 3 YouTube videos 1. Instagram Launches Reels to Take on TikTok In case you missed it, TikTok is at the center of a weird storm with the President of the US talking about banning it, and Microsoft attempting to buy it to "save" it. The blood is in the water, so of course Instagram just launched a competing user-made video service. 2. Samsung Reveals New Galaxy Note, Tab, Watch, and Buds Samsung held an Unpacked event yesterday, where it dropped juicy details on five new iterations of its popular mobile devices. All of that is exciting enough, but maybe even more interestingly, Samsung showed off the Galaxy Z Fold2 5G (now THERE'S a name for you), as well. 3. Mulan to Stream on Disney+... for $30 At first, you might think, "Wow, that's a lot of money for a movie not in a big theater that you won't even get to own," but when you think about how much theaters cost and how much COVID you could get there, $30 bucks for Mulan's live-action debut doesn't sound that bad. 🦑 Go Deeper Netflix's controversial speed controls for videos has Hollywood's heavy-hitters up in arms, while disability groups hail the new feature as revolutionary and inclusive. Dig a little deeper into the story with Lifewire's David Fierro. 🎱 By the Numbers Samsung isn't doing too badly Data: Counterpoint Research Samsung seems to be at the top of the pile for cellphone makers these days, even with the global decline in smartphone sales overall. Still, why RealMe and Vivo didn't get lumped in with Others is a little beyond us. Maybe it's a math thing? 🤓 Nerd Out "I'm not THAT old and I know what these are." -Kyree Leary, Associate News Editor Those color bars we've all seen on TVs (or seen pictures of) are more than just a random assortment of shapes and colors. Each bar has a purpose, and their layout has changed multiple times since their introduction. Motherboard has all the deets. (Share on Twitter) 💎 You Know You Want It More like unfolding our hearts and wallets, am I right? Image: Samsung The latest iteration of Samsung's most innovative device, the Galaxy Z Fold2 5G, has us in a severe state of want. Revealed today at a live-streamed event from South Korea, the newest folding smartphone promises to be both bigger AND better. And probably as pricey. Ah well, can't win them all. 🎮 Up-Down-A-B-Start Warp pipe to "leaked" code A recent (stolen) leak of Nintendo source code provides a glimpse into the creative process for Nintendo titles, including the development history and prototype builds of past games like Pokémon Diamond and Pearl. It's pretty neat to see, for sure, but also a little ethically fraught. 🗞 Extra! Extra! We've got you covered with the best in daily tech news! See the latest on our site or follow us on Google News.
