AUGUST 4, 2020
Everything worth knowing in tech today, August 4, 2020. Today is ALSO National Chocolate Chip Cookie Day. Yum! ⏰ Today's Big Stories... in 30 Seconds Today We Watched, Read, and Listened to (so you don't have to): 113 Articles, 4 Podcasts, 18 Press Releases, 859 Tweets, & 18 YouTube videos 1. Netflix Rolls Out Speed Controls on Android To the chagrin of filmmakers but the joy of the Deaf and Blind communities, Netflix is testing out a new way to slow down (by half) or speed up (by 1.5 times) video content on its network. It should come to iOS soon, but will be mobile- and web- only for a while. Accommodating to various abilities is a good thing! 2. Sony's New Controllers Won't Work for Older Games It seems a little obvious, but new PS5 games with only work with the system's new DualSense controller. Older PS4 games, which can be played on the new system, will require the older PS4 controllers. Gamers are up in arms, of course, but that's nothing super new. We do like to complain. 3. Google Announces Affordable Pixel 4a, Teases Pixel 5 Last year's Pixel 3a was a huge hit, apparently, as Google is rolling out a new version, the Pixel 4a, along with a tease of the Pixel 5. The Pixel 4a promises all the cool features of the Google flagship phones at a budget price (and in any color as long as it's black). 🎱 By the Numbers Google's not even in the top 5 Phone makers, sadly Data: Counterpoint Research We all love Google's Pixel line of smartphones, of course, but no matter what, it's still lagging behind in the US market (and several other international ones as well). Here's hoping it can make more inroads with a cheaper handset like the Pixel 4a. 🤓 Nerd Out "Is there life on Maaaaaaaars?" -Sally Slack, Strategy Director Nothing gets our dreams of spaceflight going like the idea of going to Mars. If nothing else, we can pretend to go and send our name to NASA. Get your boarding pass and get ready for (virtual) lift-off! (Share on Twitter) 💎 You Know You Want It With great power comes great responsibility Image: Tsukasa-3D These custom-made, plastic bag web shooters are perfect for fans of both Spider-Man and trash bags. (Huh?) You'll need a 3D printer for the wrist gadget, but imagine that Target employee asking if you need a bag and you *thwip* out one of your own. Only cool people do that. 🙈 Wait, What? Relax, don't do it Do you monitor your phone while it charges, only to immediately unplug it when it hits 100% for fear of it exploding? (Our mom does). Well, here's some good news: Modern phones are designed to stop the charging process once they hit max capacity, so you can leave it plugged in overnight without worry. 🗞 Extra! Extra!
