AUGUST 7, 2020
Everything worth knowing in tech today, August 7, 2020. It's Friday, which makes it SUPER appropriate that it's also International Beer Day. Prost! ⏰ Today's Big Stories... in 30 Seconds Today We Watched, Read, and Listened to (so you don't have to): 231 Articles, 8 Podcasts, 12 Press Releases, 354 Tweets, & 8 YouTube videos 1. Switch Games Are Selling in Huge Numbers During the Lockdown If you know, you know. Entire swaths of human beings have purchased video games since the whole global lockdown in March. Nintendo, in fact, is showing a massive 428% surge in profits, half of which are thanks to sales of the delightful Animal Crossing. We love you, Isabel. 2. Google Discontinues Pixel 4 and 4 XL Wow, that was fast. Didn't Google's flagship Pixel 4 (and its larger sibling Pixel 4 XL) just come out? Yep, it was less than a year ago, and a replacement Pixel 5 is nowhere near launching. Are they losing interest in selling Google phones? 3. Twitter Launches Reply Limits on iOS The feature itself rolled out a while ago, but now iPhone and iPad users can finally limit who they allow to reply to their tweets. If Twitter feels like a garbage fire at times, this is one way to put a lid on it a tiny bit. Bravo. 🦑 Go Deeper Apple just purchased Mobeewave, a company that lets you tap your credit card on your smartphone to transfer money. Our very own Charlie Sorrel takes a look at what a cashless society might look like as a result. 🎱 By the Numbers Apple Pay shows Starbucks who's boss Data: EMarketer People are getting into contact-less payments these days, and Apple's specific flavor of the tech overtook Starbucks' volume this past fall. The numbers don't lie, but how many of those Apple Pay users bought coffee? 🤓 Nerd Out "I can't wait for a Jetsons-style future." -Rob LeFebvre, Senior News Editor Clean fusion (not fission) power is the holy grail of abundant global energy, and a massive project is now underway in France. We won't see the first delivery of hot plasma power until 2025, but man is this hopeful (and cool hot)! (Share on Twitter) 💎 You Know You Want It We stan these desks Image: Uncaged Ergonomics With a ton of us working from home (and probably sitting more), we all need to burn calories and improve our posture. This baby converts your regular, old desk into a fancy, new, electric standing desk for not a lotta scratch. 🎥 Behind the Scenes Goat me some of that Stranger Things Can you imagine Netflix's "dit-dum" sound as anything else? Well, it almost was, according to the latest Twenty Thousand Hertz podcast. Tune in to learn how the iconic sound came to be, and how a goat (a what?) was seriously considered for the role. 🗞 Extra!
