AUGUST 3, 2020
Everything worth knowing in tech today, August 3, 2020, so you can be the smartest one in the home office tomorrow (Hi, Spot). ⏰ Today's Big Stories... in 30 Seconds Today We Watched, Read, and Listened to (so you don't have to): 46 Articles, 6 Podcasts, 12 Press Releases, 764 Tweets, & 12 YouTube videos 1. Apple Says New iPhones Will Be Delayed The iPhone 12 will definitely end up releasing a little later than usual, Apple CFO Luca Maestri told everyone on an earnings call last week. Could it be a Halloween gift? Christmas? Who knows? In any case, plan to keep a lid on any rampant consumerism until after September. 2. Google Maps Makes it Easier to Find Black-Owned Businesses A couple of years back, Google added badges to Maps for women-led and LGBTQ+ friendly locations and businesses. Now, the company has added badges for Black-owned places as well. It's about time, for sure. 3. Facebook Adds Official Music Videos to Your Stream Facebook has a new offering for music fans that will let you share, comment, and just plain view official video content from artists like J. Balvin, Karol G, Sebastian Yatra, Alejandro Fernandez, and Calibre 50 (here's hoping you know who these folks are). 🎱 By the Numbers That's a lot of iPhones, late or not Data: Statista The iPhone is the original modern smartphone, and it's totally holding its own in a world full of cheaper, almost-as-capable Android handsets. A 45 percent market share for one company competing with so many others—Google, Microsoft, Samsung—is pretty darn good if you ask us. 🤓 Nerd Out "Train that brain" -Kevin Hogan, Associate Content Strategist Training the brain for resilience in the face of anxiety is especially helpful these days, for sure. Dr Jamil El-Imad uses EEG technology, which monitors electrical activity in the brain, and a virtual reality headset to help people learn to stay calmer. Ommmmmm. (Share on Twitter) 💎 You Know You Want It Size does matter Image: Unihertz Billed as the "world's smallest Android 10 4G smartphone," the credit card-sized Jelly 2 is already 1200-percent funded on Kickstarter, proving that a lot of us want to climb off the bigger-is-better train when it comes to our always-on-hand devices. 🎧 Listen Up The people have spoken The science behind polling matters for all of us, regardless of politics. NPR's Science Friday podcast has a great episode on how the numbers behind big political polling work, which attempts to answer the question, "Can You Trust That Poll?" (Spoiler Alert: probably, if you know how it was conducted). 🗞 Extra! Extra! We've got you covered with the best in daily tech news! See the latest on our site or follow us on Google News.
