AUGUST 31, 2020
Everything worth knowing in tech today, August 31, 2020. Have you installed your Neuralink, yet? ⏰ Today's Big Stories... in 30 Seconds Today We Watched, Read, and Listened to (so you don't have to): 435 Articles, 12 Podcasts, 18 Press Releases, 560 Tweets, & 4 YouTube videos 1. Apple Blocks Facebook Message About App Fees Just when we thought we'd run out of "Apple is greedy" news, the tech giant reportedly blocked Facebook's message to users who organize paid online events. The message isn't showing up on Android, either, but Apple seems to bear the brunt of the coverage, of course. 2. Steam Beta Tests Chat Filtering Wow, is the gaming community a mixed bag! Online discourse can be a garbage fire of trolling, abuse, and prejudice. Steam's got a new filtering system that lets users block offensive words and phrases that they define. Sure, it's just words now, but it's a step forward. 3. Google Duo Coming to Android TV As if we didn't have enough video conferencing in our lives, Google's Duo is headed to the big screen. Android TV users will soon be able to see family members from across the world in life-size proportions. You'll still have to put on pants, but that's just the price we all pay in these unprecedented times. 🦑 Go Deeper On top of everything else, there's a laptop shortage going on. Charlie Sorrel is here to show you how a used device can be a pretty great compromise, especially for students. 🎱 By the Numbers Sorry, tablet users Data: StatCounter Most people use their mobile device (aka smartphone) to manage their digital lives, followed closely by computer users (desktop and laptop). Tablets are lovely, but don't seem to be a huge part of the conversation (yet). 🤓 Nerd Out "I want to believe" - Rob LeFebvre, Senior News Editor If you've been waiting your whole life for evidence of alien life, this mysterious (yet surprisingly regular) radio burst from space just might be your biggest hope yet. OK, probably not, but it's still a fun theory. (Share on Twitter) 💎 You Know You Want It More like Mad Mask, am I right? Image: LG If you're gonna end up wearing a mask for the foreseeable future, it might as well purify the air for you. LG's new battery-powered face gadget may not win any awards for beauty, but you've got to admit that you probably already want one. 🎧 Listen Up It's time to pay attention The founder and host of the Spawn On Me gaming podcast takes to the Branching Narratives podcast to talk about the effects of Black Lives Matter on the gaming community, as well as the challenges we all still face. 🗞 Extra!
