AUGUST 25, 2020
Everything worth knowing in tech today, August 25, 2020. Is it really National Banana Split Day and National Whiskey Sour Day? How to choose?! ⏰ Today's Big Stories... in 30 Seconds Today We Watched, Read, and Listened to (so you don't have to): 447 Articles, 8 Podcasts, 13 Press Releases, 378 Tweets, & 16 YouTube videos 1. Microsoft Takes Epic's Side in Fight With Apple Microsoft just allied with Epic Games in the fight against Apple's App Store, claiming that blocking Epic's Unreal Engine would hurt many developers. Microsoft relies on this software to make its popular racing game, Forza. Make sense now? 2. TikTok Sues US Government for App Ban and Forced Sale TikTok's owner, ByteDance, isn't going to take the dismantling of its entire business lying down. It's headed to court to fight President Trump's executive order banning the app from US shores, while promoting a sale to US companies at the same time. 3. Windows PCs Can Now Stream Android Apps If you have the Your Phone app, you can now stream Android apps right to your Windows PC from a compatible Samsung phone or tablet. It's only one app at a time, for now, and only from Samsung's devices, but hey, it's a start. 🦑 Go Deeper The fight for supremacy between Apple and Epic Games has all the drama of a titanic battle, but what about the little guy? Brandon Sams takes a deeper look at what the players are saying. 🎱 By the Numbers Apple's doing fine, thank you very much Data: Google Amid all the blather about Apple vs. Epic games, Cupertino's financial outlook is doing fairly well. It just became the first publicly-traded US company to hit the $2 trillion valuation mark, and its stock price keeps going up. It's easy to beat up on the big dog. 🤓 Nerd Out "Did it still need to sync with iTunes?" - S.E. Slack, Strategy Director Apparently, the US government built a super-secret iPod back in the early 2000s that may have actually been a spy device / Geiger counter. Only four people at Apple knew about it, too. (Share on Twitter) 💎 You Know You Want It Like something out of a 2000s-era music video Image: Motorola Who doesn't want to relive the 'turn of the century' with this retro-tastic see-through inflatable chair? You'll need to grab a much more modern Motorola Razr flip foldable phone to get it, though (worth it? You decide). 🙈 Wait, What? Just yank it out! Listen, y'all. No matter what you've been told by computer manufacturers or your dad, you do not have to "safely" eject a flash drive from your Windows 10 PC. You just don't. As for Mac users, we never eject them via menu and have never (ever!) had a problem. Just don't do it when the light is flashing, ok? 🗞 Extra! Extra!
