AUGUST 10, 2020
Everything worth knowing in tech today, August 10, 2020. Hope your weekend was as great as iTunes-hitting-the-one-million-songs-mark-today-in-2004. ⏰ Today's Big Stories... in 30 Seconds Today We Watched, Read, and Listened to (so you don't have to): 422 Articles, 12 Podcasts, 5 Press Releases, 234 Tweets, & 14 YouTube videos 1. Facebook Extends Work From Home Through July 2021 Google already decided to keep its workers home through next summer (woot!), so it's natural that Facebook would, too. Remote work is working out pretty well for most of these big tech companies, as well, so plan on seeing more of it. 2. iOS Won't Support Gaming Services Like xCloud Microsoft's Netflix-like xCloud (and Google's Stadia) streaming game services serve up unlimited(ish) gaming to your mobile phone or computer. Apple isn't going to support it, though, due to more restrictive App Store policies. What's an iOS gamer to do? 3. Netflix Finally Supports Hindi Netflix in Hindi? Yes! Seriously, this is the 3rd most spoken language in the world. More companies should support it, for more than just monetary reasons (oh wait, Prime Video and Disney+ do). 🦑 Go Deeper While we all use smart home gadgets in increasing numbers, we still don't trust them very much. A new study says as much (with some more nuance, of course) and Charlie Sorrel is here to help put it all in context, Lifewire-style. 🎱 By the Numbers This might be why Netflix is pushing Hindi Data: Kalagato Like most places, regional streaming services seem to win out here over US-based ones. Even still, Netflix has some growing to do; it's losing out to Amazon in the country. Adding Hindi support (which Prime already has) could definitely help out (or at least not hurt). 🤓 Nerd Out "Buttons and knobs and screens oh my!" -Molly McLaughlin, Content Strategist What can LEGO bricks teach us about user interface (UX) design? Quite a bit, it turns out. The folks over at Cave designs pulled 52 of those little painted control panel bricks to show how real-life panels can be better. (Share on Twitter) 💎 You Know You Want It Wakka wakka wakka Image: Hasbro What better way to relax than with a real-estate simulation game? If Monopoly is your jam, you'll likely dig this Pac-Man version, complete with a teeny, tiny game cabinet. Watch out for those ghosts, though; they charge mad rent. 🎧 Listen Up We heart cybersecurity The security of our most connected health devices (pacemakers, insulin pumps, and more, oh my) is paramount to keeping us alive, yet most of us don't even think about it. This episode of the a16z podcast takes a deep dive on the topic, reminding us all to take a better look. 🗞 Extra! Extra! We've got you covered with the best in daily tech news!
