AUGUST 31, 2020
Everything worth knowing in tech today, August 31, 2020. Have you installed your Neuralink, yet? ⏰ Today's Big Stories... in 30 Seconds Today We Watched, Read, and Listened to (so you don't have to): 435 Articles, 12 Podcasts, 18 Press Releases, 560 Tweets, & 4 YouTube videos 1. Apple Blocks Facebook Message About App Fees Just when we thought we'd run out of "Apple is greedy" news, the tech giant reportedly blocked Facebook's message to users who organize paid online events. The message isn't showing up on Android, either, but Apple seems to bear the brunt of the coverage, of course. 2. Steam Beta Tests Chat Filtering Wow, is the gaming community a mixed bag! Online discourse can be a garbage fire of trolling, abuse, and prejudice. Steam's got a new filtering system that lets users block offensive words and phrases that they define. Sure, it's just words now, but it's a step forward. 3. Google Duo Coming to Android TV As if we didn't have enough video conferencing in our lives, Google's Duo is headed to the big screen. Android TV users will soon be able to see family members from across the world in life-size proportions. You'll still have to put on pants, but that's just the price we all pay in these unprecedented times. 🦑 Go Deeper On top of everything else, there's a laptop shortage going on. Charlie Sorrel is here to show you how a used device can be a pretty great compromise, especially for students. 🎱 By the Numbers Sorry, tablet users Data: StatCounter Most people use their mobile device (aka smartphone) to manage their digital lives, followed closely by computer users (desktop and laptop). Tablets are lovely, but don't seem to be a huge part of the conversation (yet). 🤓 Nerd Out "I want to believe" - Rob LeFebvre, Senior News Editor If you've been waiting your whole life for evidence of alien life, this mysterious (yet surprisingly regular) radio burst from space just might be your biggest hope yet. OK, probably not, but it's still a fun theory. (Share on Twitter) 💎 You Know You Want It More like Mad Mask, am I right? Image: LG If you're gonna end up wearing a mask for the foreseeable future, it might as well purify the air for you. LG's new battery-powered face gadget may not win any awards for beauty, but you've got to admit that you probably already want one. 🎧 Listen Up It's time to pay attention The founder and host of the Spawn On Me gaming podcast takes to the Branching Narratives podcast to talk about the effects of Black Lives Matter on the gaming community, as well as the challenges we all still face. 🗞 Extra! Halo Released, but Not the One You Wanted
AUGUST 28, 2020
Everything worth knowing in tech today, August 28, 2020. Today in 2009, Apple released OS X Snow Leopard (and killed AppleTalk, RIP). ⏰ Today's Big Stories... in 30 Seconds Today We Watched, Read, and Listened to (so you don't have to): 356 Articles, 11 Podcasts, 24 Press Releases, 478 Tweets, & 9 YouTube videos 1. Halo is Amazon's New AI-Powered Wearable To claim a slice of the global wearable pie, Amazon just announced a new screen-free wrist gadget called the Halo. Weirdly, it uses AI to measure your voice tone and help you manage your emotional state. Way to up the "listening to you all the time" ante, Amazon. 2. Gamescom Takes its Big Gaming Show Virtual Gamescom is the world's biggest video games conference. This year, it's online (as so many of these big events are). Celebrity game journo Geoff Keighley will host the three-day event packed full of world premieres, upcoming console releases (PS5, anyone?), and gaming announcements. 3. Walmart Teams Up with Microsoft in TikTok Bid File this one under "odd things that make sense under the surface." Walmart wants to compete with Amazon, right? Which means TikTok user data is important to the mega-corp. Add Walmart's financial muscle to the Microsoft plan to buy TikTok, and you've got a perfect storm... for shareholders. 🦑 Go Deeper Artificial Intelligence (AI) has become a boon to projects that require a lot of data. Lifewire's Sascha Brodsky has a deep dive on how researchers are using AI to inform their own search for a Coronavirus cure. 🎱 By the Numbers Cyborgs "R" Us Data: IDC We rely more and more on the smart things we wear on (or in) our bodies these days. Gartner predicts the global market will hit $52 billion this year alone. Now, if we could just stop calling it "earwear." Shudder. 🤓 Nerd Out "Shake whatcha universe gave ya. Or don't" - Kyree Leary, Assistant News Editor An international team of researchers has found that seismic vibrations caused by humans have dropped by roughly 50 percent. This is, of course, due to quarantine keeping a lot of people home. Good job not walking a lot, everyone. (Share on Twitter) 💎 You Know You Want It The 6-day battery doesn't hurt, either Image: Fitbit We're super excited about the new Fitbit Sense, a full-featured smartwatch from the fitness tracker company. This gadget has it all: It'll tell you if you're in AFib (pending FDA approval, of course) and will even measure your sweaty wrist to see if you're stressed out. All for a friendly $330 price? Yes, please. 🎥 Behind the Scenes Who needs the real thing? Could this be the first legitimate use of Deepfake technology? Portland Trail Blazers superstar Damian Lillard wasn't available to star in a commercial thanks to the pandemic, so the team just put his head on a stunt double body for the spot. Sports are back, indeed. 🗞 Extra! Extra! We've got you covered with the best in daily tech news! See the latest on our site or follow us on Google News. Did someone forward this to you? Sign up here.
