September 17, 2021
It's September 17, 2021. It's Friday! We'll skip the preamble and get to why you're here: new music! You'll want to crank the volume up for this one. Apple Music | Spotify ⏰ Today's Big Stories... in 30 Seconds Today We Watched, Read, and Listened to (so you don't have to): 350 articles, 14 podcasts, 13 press releases, 544 tweets, and 16 YouTube videos 1. T-Mobile To Offer In-Store Repairs Starting November Starting on November 1, T-Mobile will offer in-store, same-day device repairs to subscribers of its Protection 360 service. Initially coming to only 500 of the company's stores, these repairs will be done by "industry-certified experts" coming from insurance provider Assurant. Nice going, T-Mobile. 2. New iPad mini Won't Have Support for mmWave 5G The new iPad mini won't support mmWave 5G like the iPad Pro. What does that mean? Well, mmWave 5G is faster at shorter distances, making it ideal for crowded areas, so expect the iPad mini to be a bit slower than its larger counterpart in those conditions. We bet you won't really notice, though. 3. WhatsApp Testing Directories for Local Businesses WhatsApp is testing local business directories, allowing users to search for shops straight from the app. The new feature is currently being tested in São Paulo, Brazil, with plans to include thousands of individual businesses in the area. It's an interesting idea, WhatsApp, and we're curious to see how it goes. 🦑 Go Deeper Speaking of the iPad mini, Charlie Sorrel is all in on the new tablet, and plans to upgrade as soon as possible. It being Apple's only A15-powered iPad is a big plus, but it's really his enthusiasm that might convince us to do the same. 🎱 By the Numbers Over 100 million strong Data: T-Mobile Q1 2020 was a back and forth year for T-Mobile. The company made some subscriber changes that saw its number drop considerably, but it then merged with Sprint, hence the boost that came in Q2 2020. Things have been steady since then, though, with the company now enjoying ~103 million subs. 🔥 Today's Hot Deal
The 15.6-inch Samsung Galaxy Book Pro is nearly $250 off on Amazon right now, dropping it to a more manageable $1,052. Need a laptop with an AMOLED screen, Intel Core i7 processor, and 512GB SSD? You'll want this one. 🤓 Nerd Out "Rock on, Perseverance." —Rob LeFebvre, Senior News Editor Checking back in on NASA's Perseverance rover on Mars, it's now begun collecting rock samples for a future return mission. Excited to have Mars rocks? Well, the scientists at NASA sure are. (Share on Twitter) 💎 You Know You Want It Who else needs a nap? Image: Philips, Amazon Trying to improve your sleep routine? Philips' SmartSleep Connected Sleep/Wake-Up Light may be just what you need. Its RelaxBreathe feature, adjustable sunrise light colors, and natural sounds could finally turn things around, and get you to sleep faster and wake up better rested. Yay, sleep! 🎥 Behind the Scenes iPhone cameras are good! The iPhone 13's cinematic mode may encourage filmmakers to use it more, but let's not pretend the iPhone hasn't already been used on film productions. In fact, Apple released a behind the scenes video in July showing some of the ways the smartphone has been used to shoot some of its ads. 🗞 Extra! Extra!
