SEPTEMBER 11, 2020
Everything worth knowing in tech today, September 11, 2020. It's a tough day for many of us: Never forget and be kind to each other. ⏰ Today's Big Stories... in 30 Seconds Today We Watched, Read, and Listened to (so you don't have to): 367 articles, 9 podcasts, 17 press releases, 332 tweets, and 4 YouTube videos 1. Portland Bans Facial Recognition Tech This northwest city isn't messing around. Portland's new ordinance bans not only governmental use of facial recognition technology, but also its use by private companies which, let's be honest, is the scarier prospect anyway. 2. Google Maps Finally Available on Apple Watch If you've been waiting (like we have) for Google's Maps app to show up on your Apple Watch since the announcement last month, the wait is over. Now you can use the "better" maps on your Apple-branded wrist gadget. 3. Facebook releases... Facebook (Campus) Mark Zuckerberg famously developed Facebook at Harvard as a replacement for student directories. Now the company is coming full circle as it releases Campus, a... student directory only available to college kids. 🦑 Go Deeper Being able to crosspost from Instagram to Facebook may seem like a simple little feature that could make your life a bit nicer, but Sascha Brodsky found out that it could, in fact, impact your privacy in unexpected ways. 🎱 By the Numbers Watch out, YouTube Data: Sprout Social Looking at the stats, it seems like Facebook and Instagram (owned by Facebook) are doing pretty well among young adults, with YouTube still the one to beat (but not by a whole lot). 🤓 Nerd Out "Honestly? Good for them." -Kyree Leary, Assistant News Editor These students figured out their tests were being graded by an artificial intelligence and learned how to game the system. Maybe AI (as a whole) isn't quite ready to take on motivated 12-year-olds. (Share on Twitter) 💎 You Know You Want It It just looks so cool Image: Microsoft Sure, Microsoft's answer to the folding phone is getting mixed reviews, but we can't wait to drop an ebook on this bad boy and read it like the print version. Oh, and, sure, maybe look cool on the subway while doing it. 🎥 Behind the Scenes OK, Tenet, time to step up The release of Mulan on Disney+ apparently increased the number of app downloads by 68% this past week (with a 193% increase for in-app spending). That's impressive, but it didn't quite match Hamilton's bump of a 79% increase in app downloads during its week of release. Rematch? 🗞 Extra! Extra!
