SEPTEMBER 10, 2020
Everything worth knowing in tech today, September 10, 2020. Happy birthday to the man behind Microsoft Word, Charles Simonyi (an immigrant, no less). ⏰ Today's Big Stories... in 30 Seconds Today We Watched, Read, and Listened to (so you don't have to): 562 articles, 7 podcasts, 25 press releases, 457 tweets, and 8 YouTube videos 1. Engineer Calls Out Facebook's Hypocrisy Facebook engineer Ashok Chandwaney wrote an internal memo to employees, saying they were quitting due to the company's continued profiting off of hate. It's bad when your own workers can't handle it. 2. Make Calls With Alexa (Via AT&T) That Amazon Echo device sitting on your counter is now able to make phone calls, thanks to a new deal with AT&T. If you're a customer of the cell provider, you can holler, "Alexa, call Ameila." Whether they answer or not is up to them. 3. Apple TV App Now on Vizio TVs The Apple-centric TV app is already available on Samsung & LG TVs, as well as on Roku and Amazon's Fire TV. Now you can get the app on Vizio smart TVs. Apple's going hard to get on every device out there. Bravo! 🦑 Go Deeper Apple and Google just updated their contact tracing systems to give local governments access without developing their own apps. Of course there are privacy issues around this software: Sascha Brodsky takes a deeper look. 🎱 By the Numbers It's still anyone's game Data: IHS Markit Samsung and LG only make up a little more than 32 percent of the global television market, which could mean it's ripe for disruption by someone like Apple (though the long-rumored iTV has never been seen in the wild). 🤓 Nerd Out "I wonder if the supernova was trying to break a record." -Kyree Leary, Asst. News Editor A supernova apparently tossed a half-exploded dead star across the galaxy like a bizarre shot put at 900,000 kilometers per hour, according to new research by some very cool astrophysicists. (Share on Twitter) 💎 You Know You Want It Yo, dawg, we hear you like clocks Image: Lenovo Quit using your phone as an alarm clock—it's keeping you up at night. Instead, grab this Lenovo-branded version of a smart clock, with just a screen to show the time and an included Google Assistant. Simplify your bedside! 🎮 Up-Down-A-B-Start How many bells does a Switch cost, anyway? All the stay-at-home stuff has the world focusing on games like Nintendo's Animal Crossing, which has revealed a supply issue as more folks try to buy the hybrid console. The gaming titan is reportedly upping its production by 20% to compensate. We hope they won't have to pay Tom Nook back for it. 🗞 Extra! Extra! We've got you covered with the best in daily tech news!
