SEPTEMBER 16, 2020
Everything worth knowing in tech today, September 16, 2020. Ahh, Web TV, we hardly knew ye (a version was released by Microsoft on this day in 1997). ⏰ Today's Big Stories... in 30 Seconds Today We Watched, Read, and Listened to (so you don't have to): 561 articles, 7 podcasts, 14 press releases, 451 tweets, and 13 YouTube videos 1. Apple Event Shows off New iPads, Apple Watches Apple continues evolving its "best products ever" with new versions of its popular Apple Watch and iPad lines. New wrist gadgets include Apple Watch Series 6 and the more affordable Apple Watch SE, while iPad gets an update, plus a brand new version of the higher-end iPad Air. New stuff is fun! 2. CBS All Access Becomes Paramount+ As if having all these different streaming services wasn't confusing enough, CBS All Access (home of all those great Star Trek shows) will be renamed Paramount+ early next year. Because we really need to confuse my parents. 3. Facebook Gives Game Streamers Licensed Music Now Facebook game streamers can add licensed music to their video streams, bringing them just that much closer to being hip and cool like their Twitch counterparts. At least, those with partner status can (for now). 🦑 Go Deeper Automatic facial recognition is everywhere these days, deployed by companies and governments alike. Portland just banned it, though, and Charlie Sorrel has a deeper look at why it's a privacy nightmare. 🎱 By the Numbers This is the way. Data: CableTV.com Sure, The Mandalorian is one of the most expensive streaming shows on right now, but it's also one of the highest-rated at 93% on Rotten Tomatoes. The Crown is at 89%, Sense 8 at 86%, Stranger Things also at 93%, while House of Cards has a 77% Tomatometer rating. 🤓 Nerd Out "Big news, everyone!" -Tim Fisher, General Manager Scientists just found traces of phosphine in Venus' habitable atmosphere layer. The gas is associated with living things here on Earth, making this a pretty huge discovery in our search for traces of life in our Solar System. (Share on Twitter) 💎 You Know You Want It We get it, we're old. Image: Microsoft We all wanted one (or more!) of these when they came out, so the news that Nintendo has made a new Game & Watch device (now with full color!) for the 35th anniversary is pretty exciting. It's a holiday gift for sure, right!? 🚀 Facing the Future One small step... Nothing says futuristic like going to the moon, right? Well, NASA has a brand-new trajectory to do just that, and it's even patented the route. It won't take astronauts up, but smaller, unmanned equipment for scientific studies. Still, it'll be a giant leap for mankind in getting to know our lunar satellite better. 🗞 Extra! Extra! We've got you covered with the best in daily tech news!
