SEPTEMBER 29, 2020
Everything worth knowing in tech today, September 29, 2020. It's National Coffee Day, so please, a moment of silent respect for our daily habit. ⏰ Today's Big Stories... in 30 Seconds Today We Watched, Read, and Listened to (so you don't have to): 421 articles, 8 podcasts, 21 press releases, 562 tweets, and 6 YouTube videos 1. US Judge Grants TikTok a Reprieve on Trump Ban Another day, another TikTok story. This time, a US judge put the brakes on the Trump administration's ban. TikTok claimed that keeping the app from App Stores would be like "locking the doors to a public forum." It's only temporary, of course; the company has until November to figure the rest out. 2. FarmVille Shuts Down Due to Adobe Flash Support It's the end of an era. Released in 2009, FarmVille was the darling of Facebook gaming from early on. Now, it's shutting down by the end of the year since Facebook won't support Flash anymore. Send your sheep gifts while you can. 3. Roku Launches a Standalone Mobile App No Roku device, no problem. Grab the Roku app on iOS and Android and access all the available free content without owning or operating actual Roku hardware. Take that, Apple TV! π¦ Go Deeper Researchers found racial bias in Twitter's photo-sharing algorithms, and the company decided to do something about it. This really just points out the trouble tech has with diversity, anyway. Brandon Sams has a deeper look at the issues across the industry. π± By the Numbers We all watch too much TV, probably Data: IDC Roku continues its climb to streaming service dominance, starting as yet another TV-connected gadget before becoming a full-on service with its own mobile app. It doesn't hurt that so many television makers bake Roku right in, too. π€ Nerd Out "Watch out for creepers!" - Rob LeFebvre, Senior News Editor Gaming nerds know how great Minecraft is for virtually creating real-world locations and structures, so it's no huge surprise to see that real people are using the game to plan and build real-world places. (Share on Twitter) π You Know You Want It Print it, then stick it Image: Apple There's something magical about Polaroids, and the company's new pocket sticker printer is just as exciting. You get the idea: Take a bunch of selfies, then stick your mug on anything (even a mug)! We want one; don't you? π Wait, What? You do you With modern computers (Macs, Windows, Linux), you really don't need to shut it down every night. You can if you want to, though, since that doesn't seem to do any harm, either. The myth we're busting? That it doesn't matter either way. π Extra! Extra! We've got you covered with the best in daily tech news! See the latest on our site or follow us on Google News.
