Instagram Bug Would Let Hackers Spy on You Another day, another app exploit discovered. This time, researchers found out malicious hackers could send Android Instagram users an image to gain control over their phone. The bug was patched, so be sure you're up to date. 2. Motorola 5G Razr Foldable Out October 2 Don't flip out, but our favorite folding phone design, the Motorola Razr 5G, will be available on Friday. Along with being the only place to get the original Liquid Mercury color, AT&T is offering the pocket-friendly phone for $700 off to new customers, and $400 off to qualifying existing accounts. 3. Disney+ Launches GroupWatch First there was Netflix Party, then Facebook's Watch Party. Now you can check out all your favorite Star Wars, Marvel, and Disney shows with Disney+ GroupWatch, a new way to enjoy movies and shows with your friends. Who's next? They're running out of names for this social viewing stuff. 🦑 Go Deeper Windows 10 can now run Android apps alongside regular ones, but is it all we'd hoped for? Sascha Brodsky has a deeper look at the implications of this cool, but possibly less useful, technology. 🎱 By the Numbers Motorola has a lot riding on the Razr Data: Counterpoint The original Razr sold from 2004 to 2013, which is why the new one hits us all in our nostalgia bone. Still, it's a tough time to sell phones. Every company is seeing massive decreases in sales this year. Good luck, Motorola! 🤓 Nerd Out "Harder, Better, Faster, Stronger" - Kyree Leary, Associate News Editor Gadget nerds love device teardowns, and this iFixit entry on the Apple Watch Series 6 is a good one. The pro-repair organization found some cool stuff, like a thinner case, a bigger battery, and a larger taptic engine. This Republic Wireless Extend Home module sends your calls to an old-school wireless handset like the Vtech one pictured. Why? Why not? It's pretty nostalgic. 🚀 Facing the Future Grow your own The future might see fields of colored cotton, avoiding the use of harmful dyes in our clothing. Sounds pretty Star Trek, right? Judge Extends TikTok’s Cinderella Story
SEPTEMBER 29, 2020
Everything worth knowing in tech today, September 29, 2020. It's National Coffee Day, so please, a moment of silent respect for our daily habit. ⏰ Today's Big Stories... in 30 Seconds Today We Watched, Read, and Listened to (so you don't have to): 421 articles, 8 podcasts, 21 press releases, 562 tweets, and 6 YouTube videos 1. US Judge Grants TikTok a Reprieve on Trump Ban Another day, another TikTok story. This time, a US judge put the brakes on the Trump administration's ban. TikTok claimed that keeping the app from App Stores would be like "locking the doors to a public forum." It's only temporary, of course; the company has until November to figure the rest out. 2. FarmVille Shuts Down Due to Adobe Flash Support It's the end of an era. Released in 2009, FarmVille was the darling of Facebook gaming from early on. Now, it's shutting down by the end of the year since Facebook won't support Flash anymore. Send your sheep gifts while you can. 3. Roku Launches a Standalone Mobile App No Roku device, no problem. Grab the Roku app on iOS and Android and access all the available free content without owning or operating actual Roku hardware. Take that, Apple TV! 🦑 Go Deeper Researchers found racial bias in Twitter's photo-sharing algorithms, and the company decided to do something about it. This really just points out the trouble tech has with diversity, anyway. Brandon Sams has a deeper look at the issues across the industry. 🎱 By the Numbers We all watch too much TV, probably Data: IDC Roku continues its climb to streaming service dominance, starting as yet another TV-connected gadget before becoming a full-on service with its own mobile app. It doesn't hurt that so many television makers bake Roku right in, too. 🤓 Nerd Out "Watch out for creepers!" - Rob LeFebvre, Senior News Editor Gaming nerds know how great Minecraft is for virtually creating real-world locations and structures, so it's no huge surprise to see that real people are using the game to plan and build real-world places. (Share on Twitter) 💎 You Know You Want It Print it, then stick it Image: Apple There's something magical about Polaroids, and the company's new pocket sticker printer is just as exciting. You get the idea: Take a bunch of selfies, then stick your mug on anything (even a mug)! We want one; don't you? 🙈 Wait, What? You do you With modern computers (Macs, Windows, Linux), you really don't need to shut it down every night. You can if you want to, though, since that doesn't seem to do any harm, either. The myth we're busting? That it doesn't matter either way. 🗞 Extra! Extra! We've got you covered with the best in daily tech news! See the latest on our site or follow us on Google News.
