February 15, 2022
It's February 15, 2022. On this day in 1999, it was Windows Refund Day; a day where Linux users went to Microsoft's offices to return their unused Windows licenses that came bundled with the PCs they bought. Yep, that happened. ⏰ Today's Big Stories... in 30 Seconds Today We Watched, Read, and Listened to (so you don't have to): 259 articles, 7 podcasts, 5 press releases, 344 tweets, and 5 YouTube videos 1. Opera Now Supports All-Emoji Web Addresses Opera has partnered with Yat, a company that provides a personal string of emojis to act as an ID, to enable web navigation using only emojis. Users can set up a personalized string of emojis to create a customizable Yat page that can act as a webpage or redirect to another URL. Neat. We wanna try! 2. Snapchat Introduces Mid-Roll Ads and Revenue Sharing Snapchat is testing a new service that inserts ads in the middle of stories, with a portion of the revenue going directly to creators. For the rest of us, this means more ads when we watch Snapchat Stories, though it's unknown how long these ads will be or if they'll be skippable. Yay, more videos we don't want! 3. LG Adds Two New 4K Projectors to CineBeam Lineup LG is introducing two new projectors: the HU715Q UST and the HU710P. Both support 4K HDR, and have features to enhance the viewing experience, like a Filmmaker Mode, an OS for streaming services, and more. They release later this year, though their prices are unknown. We bet they're expensive. π¦ Go Deeper Tesla just recalled a number of vehicles for software-related issues, and we're inclined to side with Charlie Sorrel when he says cars shouldn't have a beta period while being allowed on public roads. Get it together, Tesla. π± By the Numbers Millions of snappers Data: Business of Apps Snapchat had nearly 300 million users by the end of 2021, and there must be enough big name creators on the platform to justify playing ads in the middle of their stories. That said, we wonder how many people will turn on Snapchat once there are ads all over the place. π₯ Today's Hot Deal
Google's Nest Thermostat is $31 off on Amazon right now, dropping it to a solid $99. You know the drill; buy it, set it up, then control the temperature with your phone or voice. It's pretty convenient. π€ Nerd Out "The real streets of NYC thank you." —Molly McLaughlin, Senior Content Strategist Forget holding cycling events outdoors. Zswift, an online cycling and running training program, has set a virtual riding event for Feb. 26, complete with a digitally-recreated NYC course. See you there? (Share on Twitter) π You Know You Want It An expensive timepiece Image: TAG Heuer If you wrist has room for an expensive smartwatch, you can't get much more expensive that TAG Heuer's $1,900 Connected Calibre E4. With a stainless steel case, elegant leather wrist strap, water-resistant up to 50m, and that brand name prestige, you'll be showing off your arm every chance you get. π Doin' It Right Charging responsibly Electric vehicles becoming more common will lead to more EVs charging simultaneously, which could put a strain on our power grid. Fortunately, smart EV chargers could reduce the stress we put on on the electric grid, use renewable energy more efficiently, and save money. π Extra! Extra!
