February 4, 2022
It's February 4, 2022. Welcome to another Friday! What a week, huh? Personally, we're ready for the weekend, and we bet some of you are, too. Here's some new music to make today a little easier to get through. Enjoy. Apple Music | Spotify ⏰ Today's Big Stories... in 30 Seconds Today We Watched, Read, and Listened to (so you don't have to): 409 articles, 18 podcasts, 15 press releases, 422 tweets, and 27 YouTube videos 1. Microsoft Has Reportedly Killed the HoloLens 3 Project According to a report by Business Insider, Microsoft has abandoned the HoloLens 3. The project was killed in 2021, and Microsoft shifting its VR focus to a new venture with Samsung supposedly led to project members leaving the company. Definitely a bummer for those dedicated to HoloLens' potential. 2. A Second Surveillance Firm Was Caught Hacking iPhones Surveillance firm QuaDream has been found using an iPhone exploit to spy on targets without the need to trick them into downloading or selecting anything. Sources say the firm began using this exploit in iMessage in Sept 2021, though Apple quickly patched the exploit later that month. For shame! 3. Google Launches Chromebook Repair Program for US Schools Google has created its own Chromebook repair program to help schools keep hardware running and teach students technical skills. By making it easier to repair Chromebooks, Google hopes to foster more IT graduates, and that participating schools will reduce the amount of e-waste. Good going, Google. π¦ Go Deeper An ultraslim laptop with not ports should be exciting, right? Nope. According to Mayank Sharma and a number of hardware experts, portless laptops aren't feasible right now due to the current start of laptop tech. Aww, man. π± By the Numbers A lot of companies make Chromebooks Data: Canalys Google finally decided to make its own smartphone with the Google Pixel, but Chromebooks are still handled by other companies. Still, the not-Mac-or-Windows-laptops seem to sell well for their respective manufacturers to stick with them. Especially Acer, which has nearly a million Chromebook shipments. π₯ Today's Hot Deal
Ditch those headphones for a cooler way to listen to music. Sony's SRS-NS7 Wireless Neckband Speaker is ~$50 off on Amazon right now, dropping it to $248. Interested? You should be; how often do you get to use a neck speaker? π€ Nerd Out "Did you do today's Wordle yet?" —Kyree Leary, Associate News Editor Look, let's stop pretending we don't all play Wordle and get down to what's important: being good at it. Need some tips to guess the daily Wordle sooner? Kotaku has you covered. Now get to solving! (Share on Twitter) π You Know You Want It Bigger than before Image: Vizio, Amazon The time has come to upgrade from that tiny, boring 55-Inch TV to this Vizio 75-Inch 4K UHD Smart TV. With built-in Apple AirPlay 2 and Chromecast, Dolby Vision support, and more screen size to get even more lost in your favorite movies, what more could you need? Nothing, that's what. π₯ Behind the Scenes How's it goin', Spotify? Have you noticed some of your favorite artists and podcasters are no longer on Spotify? There's a reason for that, and it all comes back to the service's latest problems surrounding the spread of misinformation. π Extra! Extra! We've got you covered with the best in daily tech news!
