October 12, 2021
It's October 12, 2021. It's National Savings Day! Take some time today to recognize all the ways you save, and the things you've saved. Doesn't have to be money, either; it can be leftover pizza, photos, smartphones, you name it! ⏰ Today's Big Stories... in 30 Seconds Today We Watched, Read, and Listened to (so you don't have to): 155 articles, 5 podcasts, 11 press releases, 322 tweets, and 10 YouTube videos 1. Google Plans Major Revamp of iOS Apps Google is updating the design of its apps to match the look and feel of iOS. Changes will be subtle in some aspects, such as featuring more rounded buttons to match iOS' look, and more overt in others, with revamped banners, floating action buttons, and a lot more. Google, now more like Apple? Yay? 2. 'Take a Break' Instagram Feature to Begin Testing Soon In an effort to get its teenage users off their phones, Instagram will soon test an appropriately named 'Take a Break' feature. When enabled, it would give users the option to pause their account and think about how they're spending their time. Will it work? Who knows. Teenagers still like to break rules, right? 3. Facebook to Add More Controls on Its Platforms for Minors Facebook has announced plans to add new features that aim to separate teens from harmful content on its platforms. Though details are scarce, we at least know they'll include new tools for parents/guardians to supervise what teens see and do on Facebook. Baby steps, FB, baby steps. 🦑 Go Deeper If you have room in your life for a record player, go check out the Victrola Revolution Go. Sascha Brodsky is pretty pleased with it, calling it a "serious consideration for any vinyl fan." 🎱 By the Numbers Using a bit of everything Data: PewResearch Sure, a 1500 people survey isn't 1:1 with how the world uses social media, but it gives us a rough idea, at least. And based on this, more than 50% of people in the US use Facebook. Is that number worryingly high? Probably. And we doubt it's gone down throughout the year. 🔥 Today's Hot Deal
If you've been patiently waiting for Apple's AirPods Max to drop in price, your time has arrived. The headphones are $100 off on Amazon right now, making them $449! Low enough for you? Snatch them up now. 🤓 Nerd Out "Does 'Internet' count as a language?" —Kyree Leary, Associate News Editor Language is changing all the time, but what's the newest one we've come up with? Gizmodo asked a similar question and reached out to language and linguistics experts to find out. (Share on Twitter) 💎 You Know You Want It Definitely not waterproof Image: Microsoft, Xbox To celebrate the launch of the Nickelodeon All-Star Brawl video game, Microsoft created a new Xbox Series X console sporting the looks of SpongeBob SquarePants. Want one? You've gotta enter their contest and win. We're not sure who this is for, but we bet someone wants it. 🙈 Wait, What? Speak freely If you're convinced your boss can hear you even when you're muted in a Zoom call, relax. Zoom itself has come out to say meeting hosts can't secretly unmute people and listen in. The only way they can is if you give them permission. If you haven't, talk away, but make sure your camera is off, too. 🗞 Extra! Extra! We've got you covered with the best in daily tech news!
