June 3, 2021
It's June 3, 2021. On this day in 1983, the sci-fi film WarGames released, introducing many to the concept of hacking and hacker sub-culture. Shall we play a game? ⏰ Today's Big Stories... in 30 Seconds Today We Watched, Read, and Listened to (so you don't have to): 331 articles, 7 podcasts, 13 press releases, 306 tweets, and 12 YouTube videos 1. LG Pay to Shut Down in November LG will phase out its LG Pay mobile payment service in November. Starting on August 1, new users will no longer be accepted, and existing users won't be able to register new credit cards. Bummer, but we're sure its users will be able to find suitable alternatives. 2. Apple Card Payment Service Went Down If Apple Card was down for you on Wednesday—you're not the only one. Apple's system status page stated the outage started that morning at 9:17 a.m. ET, impacting users' ability to make payments and manage their cards. The Apple Card system rarely goes down, making this all the more surprising. 3. Google to Change How Ad Tracking Works on Android An updated Google document has revealed that Android 12 will soon allow users to completely opt out of personalized ad tracking. The changes go into effect sometime in late 2021, with Google claiming it will expand it to all apps available via Google Play services in 2022. Nice. 🦑 Go Deeper Instagram now lets users hide their 'Like' counts, but how much of a difference does it make? Lifewire's Allison Matyus didn't notice a big change, but maybe it's a matter of more people adopting the feature first. 🎱 By the Numbers Overwhelmingly free Data: Business of Apps, AppBrain It's not surprising that a majority of apps on the Google Play Store are free, but seeing it in chart form is a little eye-opening. For more specific numbers, there were 2,890,000 free apps on Google Play in May 2021, compared to the 114,000 paid apps. Talk about a wide gap.
