January 24, 2022
It's January 24, 2022. On this day in 1984, Apple launched the Macintosh computer, starting with a demonstration in front of a few thousand people. I think we all know where Macs ended up after that. ⏰ Today's Big Stories... in 30 Seconds Today We Watched, Read, and Listened to (so you don't have to): 253 articles, 5 podcasts, 4 press releases, 299 tweets, and 4 YouTube videos 1. Samsung's Next Unpacked Event Confirmed for February Samsung's next Unpacked event is happening in February, and it looks like the next Galaxy S will be there, too. In a post detailing the event, Samsung President Dr. TM Roh said people will lay their eyes on "the most noteworthy S series device we've ever created." Bold words. We'll see you there! 2. Google Drive Will Now Warn You If an Open File Looks Suspicious Next time you open a PDF in Google Drive, a yellow banner may tell you it's a threat. This is all part of new feature rolling out to Google Workspace and more to cut down on malware, and data theft. If you don't see the banner just yet, relax, as it might take some time for the feature to arrive everywhere. 3. Instagram to Reduce the Visibility of Potentially Harmful Posts Instagram has new ways to cut down on harmful content. In a blog post, it explains it will now push such posts lower down in content feeds, and it will also show potentially upsetting posts lower in a feed based on a user's history of reporting content. Geez. Maybe now we can finally scroll in relative peace. 🦑 Go Deeper A new bill, appropriately called the TLDR Act, could forces Terms of Service agreements to provide useful summaries of their contents. Let Mayank Sharma tell you all about it, including how some industry experts support the endeavor. 🎱 By the Numbers Yet another Google product is #1 Data: Datanyze When you think of file sharing or cloud storage, you probably think of Google Drive. Sure, OneDrive and Dropbox are good, too, but if you're already in the Google ecosystem with Gmail, YouTube, etc, why not stick with the brand? Unless you just like having options. We won't judge. 🔥 Today's Hot Deal
We've said it before, and we'll say it again: you can never have too much storage. As such, you should consider picking up Samsung's T7 2TB SSD, which is down to $289.99 on Amazon right now. Just try to use that space wisely. 🤓 Nerd Out "One step closer to Star Trek." —Bob Schulties, Senior Editor Cooking a store-bought chicken in your oven is fine enough, but what if it was a 3D printed chicken cooked with a laser instead? Mechanical engineers at Columbia University have a proof-of-concept of that very thing. (Share on Twitter) 💎 You Know You Want It Gaming with power Image: Razer The Razer Blade 15 gaming laptop should be on your wishlist if you're looking to upgrade your portable gaming setup. And since it comes with a GeForce RTX 3060, it might be one of the better ways to play with a newer GPU. At least, until video card prices come back down to reasonable levels. 🎧 Listen Up One last time in the Matrix On the series finale of Galaxy Brains, hosts Dave Schilling and Jonah Ray dive into The Matrix Resurrections and all things Wachowski. Got any final thoughts on the series or the filmmakers' library of works? This is one to listen to. 🗞 Extra! Extra! We've got you covered with the best in daily tech news!
