It's January 20, 2022, and National Disc Jockey Day! Everyone loves a good remix, so why not track down some of your favorites today and spare a thought for the artist(s) who put them together. Making good music ain't easy! ⏰ Today's Big Stories... in 30 Seconds Today We Watched, Read, and Listened to (so you don't have to): 399 articles, 12 podcasts, 9 press releases, 511 tweets, and 21 YouTube videos 1. Your Android Phone Isn't Worth as Much to Apple as It Used to Be Apple has cut the trade-in values for some of the Android phones it accepts, leading to maximum values almost $100 below what they used to be. It's not all anti-Android, though, as Apple dropped the trade-in prices for some of its own hardware, too, just not as severely. Hey, at least Apple still takes them. 2. Verizon Officially Launches 5G Ultra Wideband Coverage After teasing its 5G Ultra Wideband network earlier this month, Verizon has officially launched 5G in more than 1,700 cities throughout the US. The company hasn't provided a list of what cities are covered, but there's an interactive map to check its availability. Here's hoping we can all try it out. 3. The Apple Education Discount Loophole Is No More Apple's discount for university students and staff used to allow anyone to claim it, but the company has tightened restrictions. Now, Apple's education store requires status verification through UNIDAYS, and the discount is limited to one device per year year. Darn, we're gonna miss that exploit loophole. 🦑 Go Deeper You know what would help us deal with data breaches? Being told about them when they happen. Turns out, that's what the FCC wants, too. Mayank Sharma digs into the situation, and how security experts are also totally onboard with the idea. 🎱 By the Numbers A Note 20 Ultra was still worth that much? Data: Apple Apple really took an axe to the trade-in prices for a number of Android phones, but there are still a couple that retained some decent value. Specifically, if you're looking to trade-in a Galaxy S21+ 5G or a Note Ultra 20, you'll get north of $300 for it. Pixel 4 owners, on the other hand... we're sorry for your loss. 🔥 Today's Hot Deal
Ready to upgrade your home with a more modern doorbell? The eufy Security Wi-Fi Video Doorbell is $60 off at Amazon right now, making it a solid $100. Pick one up, install it, then finally see who's elbow dropping packages on your porch at 5pm. 🤓 Nerd Out "Steering and swimming are basically the same thing." —Stefanie Fogel, Commerce Producer Want to see a fish control a robot vehicle? Now you can, thanks to researchers at Ben-Gurion University of the Negev, who taught a fish how to steer a robot just by swimming. Neat, but also kinda weird, right? (Share on Twitter) 💎 You Know You Want It Harness the power of the sun! Image: Generark If you want more power around the home, especially in those times when you lose power, this Generark Solar Generator could be perfect for you. We feel like this doesn't need much explanation either; set up the solar panels to charge the generator, then use when you need it. Straightforward, right? 🎮 Up-Down-A-B-Start Yeah, Microsoft just did that One of the biggest things to happen in video games this week is Microsoft closing a deal to acquire Activision Blizzard. That might be great for the Xbox maker, but Engadget's Jessica Conditt is here to tell you its actually bad for all of us. But hey, more Diablo on Xbox sounds pretty good, right? 🗞 Extra! Extra!
