December 14, 2021
It's December 14, 2021, and National Monkey Day! We hear that if you gather enough of them together and give them laptops, they can write up with something pretty incredible. Eventually. Someone get them some funding! ⏰ Today's Big Stories... in 30 Seconds Today We Watched, Read, and Listened to (so you don't have to): 358 articles, 8 podcasts, 9 press releases, 343 tweets, and 13 YouTube videos 1. WhatsApp Wants to Protect You From People You Don't Know WhatsApp quietly implemented new privacy measures that protect you from people you don't know. Specifically, the app has made it so unknown contacts can no longer see your last seen and online statuses. We don't know what prompted this feature's inclusion, but we're happy to see it, regardless. 2. iOS 15.2 Nudity Detection Will Be On-Device and Opt-In Apple is proceeding with its nudity-detecting, child protection feature in iOS 15.2, but parents have to turn it on. When enabled, it'll use machine learning to detect whether sent/received photos in the Messages app have explicit material, and will alert both child and parents. Sorry, kids, but also, not really. 3. New Colorful Options Coming for the PlayStation 5 You'll soon be able to customize your PlayStation 5's look with new console covers and matching DualSense controllers. According to Sony, there will be five colors to choose from for both the console and controllers, with the latter launching first in January. Stylish! 🦑 Go Deeper The option to 'like' something is all over social media, but they don't all have to come with problems. Take it from Charlie Sorrel, who thinks Instagram-competitor Glass implemented a painless version of the concept. 🎱 By the Numbers Games sales are down? Panic! Data: The NPD Group Video game sales, across physical and digital games, consoles, and accessories are all down compared to November 2020. Games themselves only took a small hit, but the latter two categories have seen noticeable changes. We guess this is due to the global chip shortage and shipping issues. 🔥 Today's Hot Deal
If you're looking for a good Windows laptop, look no further than the 12.4-Inch Surface Laptop Go. It's $200 off at Best Buy right now, making it $699. A touchscreen, Intel Core i5 process, and a 256GB SSD? Pretty good. 🤓 Nerd Out "Maybe Amazon powers too much stuff?" —Molly McLaughlin, Senior Content Strategist Were some of your services down last week for an extended period? Well, it was all because of Amazon's AWS network. But how? Let the company itself explain it all in detail. (Share on Twitter) 💎 You Know You Want It Gotta go big Image: Amazon, Apple MacBooks are pretty dang powerful these days, but what if you went bigger? That's right, if you want a high-end Apple computer (and have $1000+ to spare), we recommend the 2021 M1 iMac with its 8‑core GPU, 8GB RAM, and 256GB SSD. You know you want one. Heck, we want one. 🙈 Wait, What? "Alexa, are you listening? Phew." Owners of Alexa-powered devices don't really need to watch what they say around it. Contrary to what some people may believe, Alexa isn't always recording you. As long as you don't say the required wake word (or something that sounds like it) you should be good to go.
