December 9, 2021
It's December 9, 2021. On this day in 1987, Microsoft released Windows 2.0, which introduced overlapping windows and the "Minimize" and "Maximize" terms we're so familiar with today. ⏰ Today's Big Stories... in 30 Seconds Today We Watched, Read, and Listened to (so you don't have to): 378 articles, 11 podcasts, 15 press releases, 394 tweets, and 19 YouTube videos 1. Google Aims to Disrupt Botnet Targeting Windows Machines Google is now taking action against the Glupteba botnet, which is estimated to have infected around one million Windows PC to steal user data. Alongside legal actions, the company will also take down infected servers and display warning messages in front of malicious web pages. Be safe out there, people. 2. Now You Can Buy Just the OLED Switch Dock, if You Want Nintendo has finally put the Switch OLED dock up for individual sale, in case you want an extra TV connection or want to update your old dock. It's available for purchase directly through Nintendo's online store and will set you back $69.99, which is nearly as much as a pair of Joy-Con controllers. Ouch. 3. Hyatt Makes Hotel Room Keys Available for Apple Wallet Apple Wallet users who stay at Hyatt hotels can now access their room and other locked areas using an iPhone or Apple Watch. The program, announced on Wednesday, is intended to offer hotel guests a faster, contactless option. Nice. We hope the hotel has a plan B if/when the digital keys don't work. 🦑 Go Deeper Having multiple Instagram accounts may seem excessive, but Charlie Sorrel wants you to know it's actually more useful than it sounds. Nothing wrong with having a personal and a professional account. 🎱 By the Numbers Nintendo thanks you, Black Friday Data: VGChartz People are still out there buying the Nintendo Switch, and we bet Nintendo is happy to keep selling them. We're not sure what caused the small dip in August and September, but it's likely that Black Friday and Cyber Monday were behind the huge number of consoles sold in November. 🔥 Today's Hot Deal
Samsung's 8.7-Inch Galaxy Tab A7 Lite is $70 off at Best Buy right now, making it a much more tempting $129.99. If you're looking for a new Android tablet, you can't go wrong here. Plus, it comes with 3 months of YouTube Premium! 🤓 Nerd Out "Pay attention, Nintendo." —Rob LeFebvre, Senior News Editor The Nintendo Switch is a great handheld-console hybrid, but what if older Nintendo hardware could do what it does? One modder set out to make just that using a Game Boy Advance SP, and the results are impressive. (Share on Twitter) 💎 You Know You Want It It's kinda cute Image: Piaggio Fast Forward Imagine a backpack, but it's not on your back and instead has wheels and follows you around. That's the Gitamini, essentially a robot carrier that'll follow you like a loyal pet. It can carry up to 20 lbs worth of stuff, has a seven hour runtime, and you can even stream music from it. Wait, is this thing just BB-8? 🎮 Up-Down-A-B-Start Welcome back, Chief The Halo series is back with Halo Infinite, and while it's still more of what fans loved, it was time for a bit of a shake up. Join Polygon senior reporter Nicole Carpenter as she explains how the game's new direction was sorely needed. 🗞 Extra! Extra! We've got you covered with the best in daily tech news!
