November 17, 2021
It's November 17, 2021 and National Take a Hike Day. We spend a lot of time in front of our TVs, computers, and tablets, but a little bit of outside might do us some good. Grab a friend, find a trail, and go explore the outdoors. ⏰ Today's Big Stories... in 30 Seconds Today We Watched, Read, and Listened to (so you don't have to): 356 articles, 7 podcasts, 9 press releases, 359 tweets, and 11 YouTube videos 1. Apple Watch Doesn't Use Mail Privacy Protection According to security researchers, the Apple Watch's email app doesn't use Apple's Mail Privacy Protection feature. Instead, the app uses your real IP address rather than a secure one provided by the security feature. Is that intentional? A bug? Either way, keep email away from your watch for a while. 2. Alexa Can Now Choose Something for You to Watch on Netflix Alexa has a new command to help indecisive Netflix users. You can now say, "Alexa, Play Something on Netflix," and Netflix will give you a show/movie based on your watch history. Sure, it only works if you have an Amazon Fire TV and speak into your Alexa Voice remote, but we still appreciate the assist. 3. Google Maps Adds New Features to Deal With the Holiday Rush Google Maps has some new features to make getting around busy areas easier. Specifically, you can now see live data on where crowds are forming so you can either avoid the area or go straight to it, and you can see how busy a place gets throughout the day. Perfect for the upcoming Black Friday rush. 🦑 Go Deeper If MacBook Pros are so good now, do you even need a desktop? Charlie Sorrel found himself wondering the same thing, because even though desktops have their place, it's getting harder to ignore the power of a good laptop. 🎱 By the Numbers Netflix Originals have an audience Data: Netflix Netflix has a decently sized library of original movies now, with millions of people showing up to watch them. We can't help but wonder, though, will the new Alexa-Netflix command recommend more Netflix Originals, or does it give everything a fair chance? It has to be the latter, right? Right? 🔥 Today's Hot Deal
If you're ready to jump from desktops to laptops, the 13.3-Inch Apple MacBook Pro (2020) is one of the best ways to go. It's $400 off on B&H Photo Video right now, making it a much easier to manage $1,099. Enjoy the power of Apple's M1 chip. 🤓 Nerd Out "Why, yes, I do like watching things get made." —Bob Schulties, Senior Editor We know SSDs are lighter and faster than HDDs, but have you ever wanted to see how they're made? Unsurprisingly, a lot of work goes into making our storage drives. (Share on Twitter) 💎 You Know You Want It When brands collide Image: Gucci, Microsoft The Xbox Series X is already a luxury purchase, but imagine if Gucci got involved, too. Enter the Xbox by Gucci, an official collab between the fashion house and Microsoft to make only 100 of these consoles. Want one? Well, they're $10k, so we're hoping you saved every penny you've ever come across. 🚀 Facing the Future Days of Future Past A conceptual EV from Ford should look like something out of Blade Runner, right? The automaker may disagree, as proven by its F-100 Eluminator concept, which is basically the the 1978 F-100 pickup's modern day twin. 🗞 Extra! Extra!
