MARCH 19, 2021
It's March 19, 2021. On this day in 1986, IBM.com was registered. It's now considered to be the 11th oldest domain name in history. Still going strong, that IBM. ⏰ Today's Big Stories... in 30 Seconds Today We Watched, Read, and Listened to (so you don't have to): 301 articles, 14 podcasts, 15 press releases, 265 tweets, and 19 YouTube videos 1. Sony Reveals Next-Gen VR Controllers for PS5 Sony has revealed the new controllers for the PS5's upcoming VR hardware. The design resembles others we seen for the Oculus Quest 2 and Valve Index, and they'll have haptic feedback, adaptive triggers, finger touch detection, and more. Can we get a hands-on, Sony? Please? 2. Facebook Adds Support for Security Keys on Android, iOS Facebook has added support for 2FA using a security key on Android and iOS. The feature was once only available on desktop, but now mobile users can boost their security, too. USB, NFC, and Bluetooth keys are supported, though Facebook won't be selling any of their own. We're okay with that. 3. Google Chrome Can Now Add Captions for Any Audio A recent Chrome update brought with it a tool that can create captions for any audio playing in the browser. Called Live Caption, Google explains it can "automatically generate real-time captions for media," including podcasts, video sites, most video or audio chat services, and more. Good on ya, Google. 🦑 Go Deeper Could Clubhouse be the next big thing in audio? Maybe, but it'll take some work. Sascha Brodsky has the deep dive on what Clubhouse is doing to build a following and the competition it's going up against. 🎱 By the Numbers Expecting big things Data: Ampere Analysis Sony sold roughly 4.5 million PS5 consoles last year, which just about lines up with Ampere's 5 million estimate. And despite the console's scarcity, it's still expected to sell well over the next few years, and may eventually hit 70+ million units. If it becomes less of a hassle to get one, we could see that happening pretty easily. 🔥 Today's Hot Deal
The Fire TV Stick with Alexa Voice Remote is $10 off right now on Amazon, bringing it to a much easier to swallow $30. Grab yours now and get to binging! 🤓 Nerd Out "Keep on keepin' on." —Bob Schulties, Senior Editor Australian soccer player Shaun Greentree was injured on the field and paralyzed last October. Now, he's getting back on his feet using a high-tech exoskeleton suit. Amazing? Fantastic? How about both. (Share on Twitter) 💎 You Know You Want It The massage you really need Image: Breo With $400 and Breo's iDream 5S, you can treat your head (and brain) to a much needed break. The helmet applies a "deep kneading massage to eyes, upper neck, and scalp areas" and it's supposed to improve your sleep and mental/physical health. Did we mention it also looks cool? Because it does. 🎥 Behind the Scenes CG counts as magic, right? WandaVision may have been full of hexes, spells, and witches, but the real magic is all the CG (and other visual tricks) used to make it happen. Insider has a few before-and-after photos highlighting some of the effects used for the show, and you can also check out the making-of documentary on Disney+. 🗞 Extra! Extra!
