OCTOBER 20, 2020
Everything worth knowing in tech today, October 20, 2020. It's Tuesday, so be sure to grab a taco for at least one of your meals today. ⏰ Today's Big Stories... in 30 Seconds Today We Watched, Read, and Listened to (so you don't have to): 423 articles, 11 podcasts, 9 press releases, 561 tweets, and 12 YouTube videos 1. Japan Joins Global Push to Regulate Big Tech It's not just Europe and America that wants to make sure we hold the likes of Amazon, Apple, Google, and Facebook accountable. Japan has now announced its intention to join the efforts in keeping Big Tech in line. 2. Apple Launches Free Music Television If you want your MTV Apple Music TV, just head into the Apple Music or TV app on your iPhone, Mac, iPad or Apple TV. So far it's US-only, but Apple Music TV will include some variety shows and countdowns along with 24-hour music video programming. 3. Disney+ Labels Potentially Harmful Content Disney has just added a 12-second, un-skippable warning to many of its classic movies when they contain racist or harmful content. While the movies or shows themselves aren't changed, at least the warning will help us all pay more attention to the changing times and perhaps be a little more sensitive. 🦑 Go Deeper VR has gotten much more powerful, easy to use, and inexpensive. The latest iteration of Oculus Quest 2 is here, and Senior News Editor Rob LeFebvre took it for a spin. Get his thoughts on this fancy new VR headset right here. 🎱 By the Numbers Do you really still want your MTV? Data: Wikipedia/Nielsen It's unlikely Apple will tell anyone how many people watch its new music-centric video service, but doesn't it feel like an idea that went out a while ago? The VMAs, MTV's award shows for music videos, hasn't done too well lately, which may show the public's appetite for it. 🤓 Nerd Out "Great, another reason for 2020 to be strange." -Jerri Ledford, Content Analyst This Halloween, look for a rare blue moon in the skies, marking the first time it's been seen in 76 years. Good omen? We sure hope so. (Share on Twitter) 💎 You Know You Want It $6K lens not included Image: Leica Camera nerds know Leica, and this special edition M10 Monochrom "Leitz Wetzlar" camera commemorates the 150th anniversary of Ernst Leitz taking over and creating Leica (Leitz+Camera) as a brand. 🙈 Wait, What? You still don't need to be on the phone ALL the time. Think you can start a fire at a gas station with your cellphone? Turns out, that's not how it works. The actual Mythbusters found out that those fires happen when someone caused a static electric spark when rubbing against a car body; they just happened to be on the phone at the time. 🗞 Extra!
