OCTOBER 19, 2020
Everything worth knowing in tech today, October 19, 2020. Here's something we all need to remember to do: Today is National Clean Your Virtual Desktop Day! Get all those files off of there! ⏰ Today's Big Stories... in 30 Seconds Today We Watched, Read, and Listened to (so you don't have to): 330 articles, 10 podcasts, 7 press releases, 245 tweets, and 13 YouTube videos 1. Google Maps and Search Show Voting Locations Not sure where to vote this year? Google's got your back with easy to find polling place locations in both Search and Maps. Better yet, you'll be able to just ask your Google smart speakers, "Hey Google, where do I vote?" 2. Apple Extends App Pre-Orders to 6 Months Developers who want to extend their pre-release marketing assault can now do so up to 6 months in advance. Apple has increased its wait time for app pre-orders, meaning you'll start hearing about upcoming apps sooner than you are now. We're not sure how much we love this one. 3. Name That Tune With Just a Whistle (or Hum) Have a tune stuck in your head but can't remember the lyrics? Well, now Google has a "Hum to Search" feature that will let you hum, sing, or whistle that jaunty tune to figure out how bad your taste in music is without much effort at all. 🦑 Go Deeper Prime Day may be over for this year, but Sascha Brodsky has a deeper look at how the sale is like catnip to impulse buyers. Do you have buyer's remorse? 🎱 By the Numbers It's not even close Data: The Manifest It turns out most of us just use Google Maps, even though there may be some die-hard Waze or Apple Maps fans. Wait, does that say "MapQuest"? 🤓 Nerd Out "Traveling at home seems like a good idea." -Bob Schulties, Senior Editor Travel nerds stuck at home might like this one. The Booktrail will let you search for books by destination, setting, title, or author so you can "get away" while staying in. (Share on Twitter) 💎 You Know You Want It Singular-use keyboard, anyone? Image: Virtuix Do you edit tons of video? It might be time to check out a custom keyboard/control surface like this amazing Loupedeck+ console so you can keep the most frequently accessed tools literally at your fingertips. 🎧 Listen Up Someone's gotta be the fall guy Interested in how Fall Guys became a certified video gaming sensation? This episode of Noclip has Megan Ralph and Joe Walsh from developer Mediatonic on to talk about the design of the hot new title. 🗞 Extra! Extra!
