OCTOBER 26, 2020
Everything worth knowing in tech today, October 26, 2020. Happy Monday—Here's a playlist to make it all better: Spotify and Apple Music. ⏰ Today's Big Stories... in 30 Seconds Today We Watched, Read, and Listened to (so you don't have to): 436 articles, 12 podcasts, 11 press releases, 511 tweets, and 7 YouTube videos 1. Music Streaming Services Pull Racist Music The BBC found "at least 20" songs that featured content advocating white supremacy, anti-Semitic rhetoric, or calls to "Aryans." This disturbing report resulted in Apple Music, Spotify, YouTube, and Deezer getting rid of the "music." What is wrong with people? 2. Microsoft May Require Microsoft Accounts for Minecraft Aside from the alliterative headline here, the news is more "Facebook accounts needed for Oculus" than anything else. Microsoft owns Minecraft, it wants you to sign up to play it, and offers some security and anti-harassment improvements along with the new requirement. 3. Google Pulls 3 Apps With Data-Collection Violations Researchers found three kids apps in the Google Play Store, with a combined 20 million downloads, that violated data-collection policies. Google pulled the apps (Princess Salon, Number Coloring, and Cats & Cosplay) when it was informed of the issue, which is probably a good thing. 🦑 Go Deeper Allegedly, Hunter Biden brought in a laptop to a repair shop and all sorts of political hijinks ensued. If you want to protect your own laptop from a similar fate, Sascha Brodsky has a deeper look at how. 🎱 By the Numbers Minecraft still has legs Data: Sullygnome Sure, a ton more folks watch League of Legends, Among Us, and Fortnite than Minecraft Twitch streams, but the latter game came out in 2009 and is still rockin'. AOC's choice to get out the vote, Among Us, is a baby in comparison, with a 2018 release date. 🤓 Nerd Out "In Spaaaaaaaace" -Kyree Leary, Associate News Editor It's been at least 20 years since every human being was present on planet Earth. Since then, at least some have been astronaut-types in space. (Share on Twitter) 💎 You Know You Want It We also want that house Image: LG For those of us who lean towards the minimalist side of home decor (and who also have $87K ready to spend), here's LG's promised roll-up TV set that's available in Korea now. We really would like one, and guess you would, too. 🎧 Listen Up It's still not a very good cheese grater Six Colors' podcast gets down into the nitty gritty about the PowerMac G5, originally announced in 2003 at WWDC by Steve Jobs himself. The design continues on even now, with the "cheese-grater" look adopted by the latest Mac Pro tower. 🗞 Extra! Extra! We've got you covered with the best in daily tech news!
