OCTOBER 15, 2020
Everything worth knowing in tech today, October 15, 2020. It's National Grouch Day, which lets us all release our inner curmudgeon (or Oscar, for that matter). ⏰ Today's Big Stories... in 30 Seconds Today We Watched, Read, and Listened to (so you don't have to): 521 articles, 7 podcasts, 13 press releases, 347 tweets, and 9 YouTube videos 1. Netflix Quietly Kills Free Trials for New Members Whether it's because the company doesn't need to offer free trials, or because they can't afford to, Netflix has quietly shut down its new member perk. No more try before you buy from the top dog in the streaming space. 2. PS4 Gets Better Parental Controls, Loses Private Groups In one last push before the PS4 is rendered obsolete by the PS5 in November, Sony pushed out a final system update (v. 8.00) to beef up its parental controls. It also took out the ability to create private groups and events (sad!) 3. Apple Drops Price of Peripherals Ahead of iPhone 12 Launch Now that the iPhone 12 won't come with packed-in EarPods or even a wall charger, Apple's dropped the price of both by $10 for those of you who still want one of either. They're both now only $19 directly from Apple. 🦑 Go Deeper Did you see Apple's October event? The sheer volume of new iPhone 12 models is a lot! If you missed it, though, Charlie Sorrel is here to look a little deeper at the announcements and what they mean for us all. 🎱 By the Numbers Slow and steady wins the race Data: eMarketer The trend is onward and upward for Netflix, though these numbers don't take into account the recent pandemic. Do they even need free trial periods anymore? I bet lots of consumers would appreciate them. 🤓 Nerd Out "Maybe Morpheus was right." -Tim Fisher, General Manager It takes a lot of advanced math to understand fully, but scientists think we have a 50-50 chance of living within a simulation. Let's hope it's more Sim City than Matrix, though. (Share on Twitter) 💎 You Know You Want It This thing is massive Image: Rob LeFebvre Want a huge TV? How about an 8K television? What if it had Alexa built in? Well, you're in luck, as this massive, gorgeous LG set checks all the boxes, including super expensive! 🎮 Up-Down-A-B-Start Ganking n00bs on the go One of the biggest names in eSports, Riot Games, is coming to the iPhone 12 courtesy of all the new tech in Apple's new flagship phone, like the A14 Bionic and 5G. League of Legends: Wild Rift should hit iOS this fall, so get ready. 🗞 Extra! Extra! We've got you covered with the best in daily tech news! See the latest on our site or follow us on Google News.
