FEBRUARY 18, 2021
It's February 18, 2021. It's National Battery Day and we can't think of a better celebration for a technology newsletter. Hooray for portable power! ⏰ Today's Big Stories... in 30 Seconds Today We Watched, Read, and Listened to (so you don't have to): 387 articles, 9 podcasts, 18 press releases, 515 tweets, and 12 YouTube videos 1. Pay for Parking and Public Transportation With Google Maps Google just added the ability to pay for your subway ride or parking space via its own Maps app. Not only can you find parking spots, but you can top up your meter from the app, too, making sure you don't have to rush to beg the parking meter officer to let you drop a quarter in. 2. YouTube Updates Will Focus on Shorts, Streamers, and Shopping The upcoming updates for YouTube in 2021 include a new focus on Shorts videos (a la TikTok), easier donation systems for streamers, and, surprise, online shopping. More ways for YouTube to make money, too, of course. 3. Malware Is Already Showing up for M1 Macs That didn't take long. Just months after Apple released its new M1 chips into the wild, security researchers found malware targeting Mac hardware with the M1 chips. Maybe this is a sign of how popular the new machines are? Still, keep your M1 updated. 🦑 Go Deeper It hasn't always been easy for women in the gaming industry, but Brenda Romero has built a successful legacy for herself within it. Now she's focusing on supporting other women, while still creating games of her own. Allison Matyus has the story. 🎱 By the Numbers Apple soars ahead Data: Gartner Apple's growth from Q4 2019 to Q4 2020 rose an astonishing 31.3 percent, beating out the next top maker, Lenovo, which saw 21.3 percent growth in the same period. This is the quarter after the M1's release, showing how well the company did with the transition. 🔥 Today's Hot Deal

That's how a group of researchers discovered this six-and-a-half-foot-long predatory worm from more than 20 million years ago. Yikes. (Share on Twitter) 💎 You Know You Want It That's a big TV Image: Samsung If you're gonna go 8K, you might as well get a massive TV while you're at it, right? This 85" Samsung Neo QLED 8K Smart TV might be your best bet, though at $9,000, it might be a bit beyond most of us. Still, we want one. 🎮 Up-Down-A-B-Start Somebody set up us the bomb This crummy translation from an unpopular '90s video game became one of the first internet memes. "All your base belong to us," along with its various early internet incarnations, turned 20 years old this week, and we wanted to remind you. You're welcome. 🗞 Extra! Extra!
