Logran crear un transistor compuesto por sólo siete átomos

Investigadores australianos han logrado crear un diminuto transistor compuesto por sólo siete átomos de fósforo. Si se lograra industrializar el proceso, podría ser la base de una generación de chips más rápida y pequeña.

El transistor es el elemento electrónico fundamental que ha permitido la fabricación y popularización de todo tipo de artilugios, desde los ordenadores a los teléfonos móviles. Todos los chips están formados por millones de estos elementos. Cuanto más pequeños, más rápidos son y menos consumen. Las tecnologías de fabricación están constantemente mejorando; la más avanzada actualmente permite fabricar un transistor de silicio que ocupe sólo 22 nanómetros.

Investigadores del Centro de Tecnología de Computación Cuántica (CQTC, por sus siglas en inglés) de la Universidad de Nueva Gales del Sur han logrado crear un transistor formado por siete átomos de fósforo, según informa la BBC. Los científicos han podido sustituir átomos individuales de un cristal de silicio por átomos de fósforo, formando un transistor que ocupa sólo 4 nanómetros.

"La importancia de este logro no consiste en que estemos moviendo átomos de aquí para allá o que los miremos con un microscopio", ha declarado a Daily Tech la profesora Michelle Simmons, coautora del estudio publicado por Nature Nanotechnology. "Estamos manipulando átomos individuales y colocándolos con precisión atómica para construir un elemento electrónico funcional. Hemos sustituido sólo siete átomos concretos de silicio por átomos de fósforo. Eso supone una exactitud asombrosa".

No obstante, el problema estará en poder industrializar el proceso para que la tecnología alcance a los aparatos que empleamos a diario, algo que según los propios investigadores queda aún algo lejos. Para su fabricación "artesanal" el equipo usó un microscopio de efecto túnel con el que colocaron los átomos de fósforo en su lugar
